Green Oaks, Libertyville, Mundelein, Vernon Hills (GLMV) Chamber & TDS Metrocom Connect Families with Troops in Iraq The GLMV Chamber, in conjunction with TDS Metrocom, Freedom Calls Foundation, and a local police station, is providing free video teleconferencing to all families who have soldiers serving in three cities in Iraq: Fallujah, Taji, Al Asad. The joint project is called Operation Freedom Calls (also known as Operation Connect). "Currently, hundreds of Lake County men and women are serving in the military abroad, leaving loved ones behind," said Dwight Houchins, president, GLMV Chamber of Commerce. "We thought this was a terrific opportunity to show our support for the troops oversees by helping them stay in touch with their family members." Lake County launched Operation Freedom Calls November 18 at the Libertyville Police Station. During the Kickoff Event, a soldier currently serving in Iraq visited with his family via the live, two-way video conferencing hook-up. TDS Metrocom, a local telecommunications provider, has donated the high speed Internet access and technical support. Appointments are necessary to schedule the teleconference at the Vernon Hills Police Station, 754 Lakeview Parkway, Vernon Hills. In addition, local companies and individuals are encouraged to make donations of phone cards, personal hygiene items and other necessities for care packages that will be sent to troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Donations will be accepted at the GLMV Chamber offices at 1123 S. Milwaukee Avenue, Libertyville.
