Step inside local disabled veteran-owned and operated Hot Ground Gym® where veteran entrepreneurs are making their mark in the business world, helping ordinary kids become heroes of their own action-packed mission.
Founded 12 years ago by Marine Veteran Doug Gialds, with Army Veteran and former first responder Sam Simpson as Co-Owner, Hot Ground Gym is a first-of-its-kind child development and leadership program built on the values of service, discipline, and teamwork.
Hot Ground Gym also prioritizes community engagement, participating in local events, supporting causes, and creating opportunities for all.
For over a decade, the gym’s team has been helping strengthen kids — physically, mentally, and emotionally — through obstacle-course fitness, teambuilding challenges, and leadership lessons that build confidence and character.
After their military service, Doug and Sam found purpose in continuing to serve their communities by guiding the next generation. Every program reflects the same principles they lived by in uniform: lead by example, support your team, and never quit. Kids learn resilience, confidence, and problem-solving, while parents appreciate the lasting impact on responsibility, communication, and focus.
“The goal isn’t just for kids to get active — it’s to empower them to discover what they are capable of achieving when they push past limits, support others, and stay committed to completing a task,” notes Sam. Some former students have even gone on to become the best instructors!
Sam notes that the activities are designed to be fun, high-energy, and different from anything children experience in school. Whether climbing, crawling, or strategizing with a group, kids learn how to overcome challenges with both physical effort and mental resilience. Parents appreciate the supportive community atmosphere and balanced approach to physical fitness and character development.
“We guide kids through activities that teach responsibility, communication, and teamwork — key life skills that translate outside the gym and into school, friendships, and family life,” said Sam. Many families notice increased confidence, better focus, and will try new experiences after just a few sessions.
Programs are available year-round for various age groups, birthday parties, and seasonal camps. This week, HGG kids are learning the same knots used by firefighters, sailors, and first responders — and crushing it!

Hot Ground Gym Participates In 6th Annual GLMV Coats for Vets Drive, already filling donation boxes several times over with winter gear for vets and their families in need. “As a veteran-owned and operated business, this cause means the world to us. Your generosity has already filled one box — so we’re bringing in a second! Let’s fill that one, too, and show our veterans that their service and sacrifice are never forgotten.”  The gym participates in other community events and drives, supports and promotes other small businesses, as well.
“We’re pleased to welcome Hot Ground Gym to our GLMV Chamber and look forward to a wonderful partnership,” notes GLMV President Scott Adams.
With locations inside Canlan Sports Complex – Libertyville, Arlington Heights, and Austin, Texas, Hot Ground Gym® continues to strengthen the future — one child, one community at a time.
